Diagnosis of LPRD

  • History and symptoms that are suggestive of LPRD
  • Examination of throat (including office endoscopy)
  • Redness in throat and/or back of larynx
  • Swelling at back of larynx ("pachydermia")
  • Redness or swelling of vocal cords
  • Redness or swelling below vocal cords
  • Presence of certain other vocal cord lesions (polyps, dilated blood vessels, granulomas, contact ulcers, leukoplakia)
  • A 24-hour pH probe is sometimes done to measure acid levels in the esophagus
